Description
Hamburg Box
Since spring 2020 the inhabitants of Hamburg have a new possibility to receive parcels while travelling the city: The pilot project Hamburg Box offers parcel lockers at over 20 rapid transit train (S- and U-Bahn) stations. This way public transport users can use the lockers which consist of up to 150 compartments on their daily routes. The Hamburg Boxes are provided by Deutsche Bahn AG (German Railway), Hamburger Hochbahn AG (Subway service) and the IT-company ParcelLock, as well as the parcel delivery companies Hermes and DPD. The city of Hamburg is used as a testbed to find out, if this model can be expanded to other German cities. The project is also one of the over 70 ITS-Projects which are taking place in connection with the ITS-World-Congress about Intelligent Traffic and Transport Systems held in Hamburg in October 2021.
Hamburg is the first German city, where renowned mobility providers, a parcel locker company and parcel delivery companies developed a solution together: The Hamburg Box systematically connects important transport hubs with flexible, sustainable parcel receival. Placing the Boxes at train stations has the goal of reducing failed attempts to deliver parcels at home as well as reducing additional private rides to parcel lockers.
Since the software ParcelLock is an open-ended system, not only parcel delivery companies, but also local traders can use it to connect their online and an in-store options for deliveries outside of their business hours. Using the Hamburg Box is free of charge and possible as a registered user as well as a “guest”. Clients can choose the Hamburg Box as the delivery place when ordering and receive a code to open the compartment. Registered users also have the option return parcels through the lockers.
Towards the end of 2021 the experiences gained in this pilot project will be used to measure its impact on the integration of logistical services into the public transport system with the goal of improving and expanding it.

Innovation and Relevance
The Hamburg Box pilot project falls under the testbed class III of idle and new infrastructures. It uses existing public transport hubs for the integration of new logistical services, with the goal of reducing delivery traffic as well as private traffic to pick-up-points to lower congestion and CO2-emission. The open-ended software system allows the delivery of goods across all providers and regardless of delivery company, which allows the testing of a white label locker solution.
Relation to other urban Logistics Projects
The project is one of the over 70 ITS-Projects (Intelligent Traffic and Transport Systems) which are taking place in connection with the ITS-World-Congress held in Hamburg in October 2021.
Plans for Future Development
The pilot project runs until March 2022 when the collected data has to be analysed regarding factors like user acceptance. The aim of the project is to expand the Hamburg Box system in to other cities in Germany.
