ASAP Testbeds

Vienna | Organic

Description

Clean, Organic Food Transport in Vienna
In Vienna, the company Heavy Pedals has been offering delivery services by cargo bike for many years. In addition to the delivery service by cargo bike, the company also sells cargo bikes and develops mobility solutions by cargo bike. All this long before the cargo bike became a trendy vehicle in many European cities. For many years, the company has also been involved in research and development projects and is also a member of Thinkport Vienna.
This is not surprising, as cargo bikes are not only superior to motorised vehicles in inner-city areas in terms of speed, but also offer more flexibility in terms of access. Furthermore, they also make economic sense, as they are not only cheaper to buy, but also to operate. The biggest plus points are undoubtedly that they are emission-free and space-saving.

It is therefore not surprising that two other companies that consider environmental protection very important have the delivery of their products organised by cargo bike. Two producers and distributors of organic fruit and vegetables in Vienna have many of their food packages delivered by cargo bike. A dynamic hub and spoke system in the city is used for this purpose, and there is storage space for both companies in the city centre. Delivery is done with a combination of delivery vans and cargo bikes.

In total, over 25,000 addresses are supplied annually and receive over 30,000 vegetable and fruit boxes. For one company alone, up to 120 addresses are delivered by cargo bike on one day with up to 3 tours run per bike.

Innovation and Relevance

The use of idle and new infrastructure as transhipment and distribution points for inner-city delivery increases the potential use of cargo bikes at the last mile. The success and rapid expansion of the testbed that started out with the delivery of only a few boxes, shows the need and demand for such measures in cities. Learning from the results of this testbed is beneficial for many if not all European cities.

Relation to other urban Logistics Projects

Heavy Pedals have been a partner in several national, Austrian research and innovation projects that test the potential of cargo bikes in inner city areas. These projects were:
RAKO Donaukanal: Bicycle combitransport Donaukanal – Modern City Logistics per water and bike
Remihub: Urban freight logistics on public transport areas
MiHu:
Analysis of cooperation potentials for urban midi hubs - a comprehensive stakeholder approach for an efficient use of infrastructure.
