Description
HUBERT - developing, realising and testing a micro hub
HUBERT is the new delivery service of the logistics centre Port of Vienna for a sustainable and efficient supply of business and commercial enterprises in the city of Vienna. Goods are bundled on the outskirts of the city and delivered using environmentally friendly vehicles.
The Port of Vienna, a Wien Holding company, is one of the largest freight transport centres in Austria. In cooperation with BOKU Vienna, the mobility laboratory thinkport VIENNA was launched here in 2017. One of the pilot projects developed here is HUBERT, the new logistics service of the Port of Vienna.
With the growth of e-commerce, the number of freight transport trips in urban areas is also increasing. One of several approaches to reducing these journeys in the future is to bundle goods at a central goods handling point, a so-called hub. HUBERT is such a city hub, which enables a sustainable and efficient supply of business and commercial enterprises in the city of Vienna. The first or last mile in particular poses a special challenge in freight transport, which calls for innovative logistics solutions, as it is here that good utilisation of delivery vehicles and the bundling of goods flows are especially important.
In the HUBERT project, goods are temporarily stored in HQ7 - a commercial area belonging to the Port of Vienna near the Freudenau harbour - in order to then deliver them bundled with electric vehicles as well as with vehicles of Wiener Lokalbahnen Verkehrsdienste GmbH (WLV) to B2B recipients. Bundling the parcel flows avoids multiple trips, which not only reduces CO2, but also ensures less traffic and particulate emissions as well as an improved traffic flow. In addition, HUBERT makes individual and flexible delivery possible.
Two of the electric vehicles from the Port of Vienna are used for deliveries with HUBERT. Through a cooperation with WLV, which is also located at the same site, their 120 vehicles can also be used for deliveries, depending on the workload. HUBERT thus makes perfect use of the synergy effects on site and optimally tests existing resources. The disposal of packaging material is also not necessary for the customers, because HUBERT also takes care of the removal of cardboard boxes, returns and first mile shipping.
HUBERT is the further development of a business model that has already existed in Holland for many years. The project was developed in close cooperation with the City of Vienna and the Vienna Business Agency. The project is supported by the Port of Vienna and the City of Vienna. The costs of HUBERT for the customers amount to 130 euros per month per customer location and include delivery twice a week as well as taking away packaging waste.
